How do I get sustain

One of the best techniques for adding sustain is a good vibrato. I use a medium slow vibrato on most all of my notes longer than a 1/2 note. I push and pull the string side to side in a smooth tempo across the point where the string is perfectly straight. This way I do not bend the pitch too high. I also will vibrato chords. Chords sound better with a little vibrato.

One more suggestion is to hold down notes as long as you can. For example if you play a note on the 12th fret of the 3rd string and the next note is on the 9th fret 2nd string, hold down the 12th fret note with your little finger and play the next note on the 2nd string while the 12th fret note is still held down. You can play a whole scale by sustaining the highest note on each string while you play the 1st 2 notes on the next string. Fig1
