How Do I Get Rid Of That String Buzz?

First I will begin by saying I find that a little string buzz can actually be desirable! It gives the sound a human feel, in the same way a little finger screeching on a acoustic guitar does.

Now that being said here is a few ways to limit the string buzz. 1st, tap about 2/3rds the way to the fret that is making the note Fig1. 2nd; work on lengthening your sustain. One of the best ways is good vibrato. This is covered in the sustain lesson. 3rd; sometimes buzz is caused by other fingers, make sure that the end of your fingers are close to perpendicular to the fretboard. 4; note that the 2 biggest strings tend to buzz a little more, these need the most practice 5: setup is important. Check the frets by playing every note chromatically on each string to see if any tend to buzz. 6: check to make sure that the nut screws (the ones by the tuning pegs are not too low. It is possible to have the string buzz after you lift your fingers off the board because the string on that end is too low.

The last and most important part is control. I have had people say "how do you sound so clean" when I can hear myself buzz a few strings. Part of this is when you play rhythmically on and have good sustain and vibrato this can cover up a lot of small boo boos. I think they call it feel.

Remember if you play with control and emotion most of that ugly buzz sound will magically go away. The buzz that is left will become expression in your playing.
