Playing The Blues

In this lesson we will learn a few blues phrases you can add to your playing. Play each example several times before playing along with the bass side. At the end of this lesson is a 15 second sound clip demonstrating a good way to practice the phrases using a technique I call the "free jam". Pay close attention to the phrasing of each riff, especially in the last phrase where I bend and then tap the second note while still holding the bent note up. The sound clips are all around 45k in size so the download time is short. Each exercise is followed by a brief tip on executing the phrase.

P=Pull-off from 15 to 13

Leave 1st finger down

Use  the following fingers  respectively 2,3,1,2,1,4,1

S=Slide

B-P= Bend then pull-off to next note.

Bend with 4th finger if you can it's quicker.

Make sure you time the 2 pull-offs evenly.

This phrase can be played in rapid succession.

Listen to how I hold the notes as I play the next one

Hold the bent note while tapping and pulling off the 20. It's a bit tricky at first

I use the Dminor pentatonic scale for the blues phrases. For the back ground chords I use Dminor to G7.

Here is an audio example of an easy way to play chords and solo. I play the chord and alternate with the phrase without trying to keep time. It is a lot of fun and sounds good without too much effort. I call it "free jamming".
